Ammonites were predatory marine mollusks (cephalopods related to the modern octopus and squid) that went extinct roughly 66 million years ago. This specific specimen has been cut in half and polished to beautifully expose the internal, spiral-coiled chambers (known as camerae) that the animal used for buoyancy regulation in ancient oceans.
